40TH READINGS AT CHARTWELL BOOKSELLERS celebrates our 40th Anniversary with the 40 best books about Winston Churchill published during the store's forty year existence. We are toasting these books chronologically with a new video reading by a distinguished guest reader every week.
The series commenced on the exact 40th Anniversary of our opening, April 11, 2023, with actor JOHN LITHGOW reading from "THE LAST LION," by William Manchester.
This week we present Book # 18: "CHURCHILL WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE," by Winston Churchill's granddaughter, CELIA SANDYS. Published in 2000, the book thrillingly reconstructs Churchill's experiences as a war correspondent during the Boer War in South Africa, including his infamous escape from a Boer prison, an escape that received worldwide attention and ultimately launched his political career.
Our guest reader is the author herself, CELIA SANDYS, who launched most of her books over the years with publishing parties at Chartwell Booksellers, including "CHURCHILL WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE."
