The trust deficit between govt and the Opposition has never been so low. For the first time in the past 26 years, elections will be held for the post of the deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha. The trial of strength has been necessitated following the end of the term for Congress leader PJ Kurien, who occupied the chair for more than six years. The Modi govt has done a coup of sorts by fielding JD(U) MP Harivansh Narayan Singh, sending a peace gesture to its sulking ally. The Congress has nominated BK Hariprasad from Karnataka, although there was a talk of NCP's Vandana Chavan emerging as the United Opposition candidate. Remember, it was way back in 1992 when a full-blown contest was held for this prestigious post. Watch this India Development Debate with Sandeep Gurumurthi and Supriya Shrinate as they discuss the slugfest between the treasury and the Opposition benches, and what it holds for the all-important general election.
