Twenty fire engines and around 125 firefighters were called to a fire at a flat in Sherbrooke Way in Worcester Park.

Most of the four-storey building was damaged by the fire. Around seventy residents left the building before the Brigade arrived. There were no reports of any injuries.

The Brigade's 999 control officers took 31 calls to the fire.

Group Manager Rick Ogden, who was at the scene, said: "On arrival, crews were faced with a well developed and intense fire.

"This was a challenging fire involving all floors of a four storey building. Firefighters worked hard to bring the blaze under control.

The Brigade was called at 0127 and the fire was under control at 0631. Firefighters remained on scene throughout the day (Monday 9 September) and are continued to damp down hot spots till the morning (Tuesday 10 September)
