The Casio FX 83 is one of the most common calculators in use.
The FX 83ES is the dual power variant, with both a battery and a solar panel. In low light conditions the solar panel will not work so if the battery has lost it's charge then the calculator will appear to be dead.
It takes an LR44 button cell which are readily available from a number of sources.
With a suitable small screwdriver it should take less than five minutes to change the battery. Casio recommend changing the battery every three years even if the calculator appears to be working correctly. It is certainly something to think of doing prior to any important examinations if you have been using the calculator regularly and are concerned that the lighting in your examination hall is not going to be bright enough to power it using just the solar cell.
