A drainage layer is an essential part of any tropical or otherwise humid herp enclosure, preventing the the substrate from becoming a stagnant pool. This is no more apparent that in a bioactive setup where the stagnation of the substrate (substrate choice being the topic that we'll cover in episode two of this series) will kill off your clean up crew and any live plants that may be present.
