1000 types of minerals, more than 12 thousand mineral basins – this is the Urals. Ural ridge stretches from the Arctic to the steppes of Kazakhstan. "Stone", "Stone Belt" — this is what these mountains were called by Russian pioneers and indigenous peoples: Khanty, Mansi, Komi, Nenets. The name "Ural" came from the Bashkir language, and became widespread thanks to the historian and industrialist Vasily Tatishchev, founder of Perm and Yekaterinburg. The first money here was earned by salt miners. Ural cast iron began to be smelted under Peter the Great and local smiths achieved incredible skill in it. Ilmen Reserve is the only mineralogical reserve in the world. Not only is hunting and fishing prohibited here, but also collecting minerals. Kapov cave preserves Paleolithic cave drawings.
