St. Olav’s Church, or Oleviste Church, is a Gothic landmark in Tallinn, Estonia. Named after King Olaf II of Norway, it was originally built in the 12th century. At one point, its spire made it the tallest building in the world, reaching 159 meters. Though it has been reconstructed several times due to lightning strikes, it remains a significant part of Tallinn’s skyline at 124 meters today.
Visitors can climb over 200 steps to an observation deck for panoramic views of the city. The church’s historical significance extends to the Soviet era when its spire was used for KGB surveillance.
Tallinn Zoo, founded in 1939, is the largest in Estonia, housing over 500 species across 87 hectares. The zoo focuses on conservation, especially for endangered species like the Amur leopard and European mink. Popular exhibits include the Tropical House, Nordic animals like polar bears, and the Elephant House. Family-friendly activities include a children’s petting zoo and playgrounds.
The zoo also hosts educational programs and events year-round. Though some areas need updating, the zoo’s focus on animal welfare and its participation in global conservation projects make it a meaningful and enjoyable destination for families and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
