Domesticated rice is the most widely consumed staple food for over half of the world's human population.
The traditional method for cultivating rice is flooding the fields while, or after, setting the young seedlings.

The rice plant can grow to 1–1.8 m (3–6 ft) tall, occasionally more depending on the variety and soil fertility.
Rice is the predominant dietary energy source for 17 countries in Asia and the Pacific, 9 countries in North and South America and 8 countries in Africa.

White cooked Rice is 68% water, 28% carbohydrates (0.1% sugars, 0.4 dietary fiber), 3% protein, and 0.3% fat.
100 g (3.5 oz) of White cooked Rice provides 7% of Vitamin B6, 10% of Manganese and 6% of Phosphorus of the Daily Value.

In 2021, world production of paddy rice was 787.7 million metric tons, led by China and India with a combined 52% of this total
