The Ancient Mataram Kingdom was one of the largest Hindu-Buddhist patterned kingdoms that had ever developed in southern Central Java. Its founder was Rakai Mataram, the Queen Sanjaya, who reigned between 732-760 AD.
Then, the kingdom moved to East Java in the 10th century. In the Central Java region, the location of the Ancient Mataram Kingdom is thought to be in Bhumi Mataram, which is what Yogyakarta was called in the past.
The ancient Mataram kingdom ruled for almost three centuries with three ruling dynasties, namely the Sanjaya dynasty and the Syailendra dynasty in Central Java, while the Isyana dynasty in East Java.
1. Ngawen Temple
Ngawen Temple is located in Ngawen Hamlet, Muntilan, Magelang. This Buddhist temple was built in the 8th century. The architecture of this temple is very unique, one of which is found on a lion statue that supports the four sides of the building. This style of lion statue carving can be found in several temples in Mathura, India.
2. Kalasan Temple
Kalasan Temple is located in Tirtomartani Village, Sleman, Yogyakarta. The 34 meter high temple building has three parts, namely the foot of the temple, the body of the temple and the roof of the temple. This Buddhist temple which was built in 778 AD is an offering to the Goddess Tara.
3. Borobudur Temple
The largest Buddhist temple in Indonesia, Borobudur consists of 10 levels and reaches 42 meters high.
Built during the reign of King Samaratungga of the Syailendra Dynasty, it is located in Magelang, Central Java. Completed in 824, nearly a hundred years since its inception.
4. Sambisari Temple
Sambisari Temple is located in Sambisari Hamlet, Sleman. The temple building is surrounded by two layers of walls in which there are four temples. Hindu temple with Old Javanese writing on a metal plate which means Lord Shiva at the beginning of the 9th century, which is still related to the government of Rakai Garung.
5. Sojiwan Temple
Sojiwan Temple is located in Kebondalem Kidul, Klaten, Central Java. From an inscription which is now stored in the Jakarta National Museum, this Buddhist temple was built around 824-850 AD.
6. Sewu Temple
Sewu Temple is located in Bugisan Village, Klaten, Central Java. This fairly extensive temple complex contains 249 buildings consisting of the main temple, eight flanking temples, and 240 ancillary temples.
7. Gedong Songo Temple
The Gedong Songo Temple group is located north of Ambarawa, on the slopes of Mount Ungaran, Central Java. This Hindu temple has similarities with the temples in Dieng and both are considered to be the oldest temples in Central Java. Gedong Songo Temple consists of nine temples lined up from the bottom up the mountain.
8. Dieng Temple
Dieng Temple is a Hindu temple, located in Kejajar, Banjarnegara. Temples are spread across the Dieng plateau.
These temples are named after wayang figures, such as Bima Temple, Arjuna Temple, Gatotkaca Temple, Puntadewa Temple, Srikandi Temple, and Semar Temple. Its construction is estimated between the 7th century to the 13th century.
9. Plaosan Temple
Also called twin temples, because it consists of two temple buildings that are the same shape. Located in Bugisan Hamlet, Prambanan, not far from Prambanan Temple. King Rakai Pikatan, deliberately built this temple for his wife named Pramudyawardani. Plaosan Temple has 116 stupas and 50 ancillary temples.
10. Prambanan Temple
Also known as Loro Jonggrang Temple, it was built in the 10th century during the reign of Rakai Pikatan and Rakai Balitung. It has three temples facing east, namely Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva temples. Each temple has a companion temple facing west, namely Nandini for Shiva, Angsa for Brahma, and Garuda for Vishnu.
11. Mendut Temple
Mendut Temple is a Buddhist temple. Its founder was King Indra from the Syailendra dynasty, who had the title Sri Sanggramadananjaya. Built in 824 AD. Inside there are three large statues, namely Cakyamuni, Avalokiteswara, and Maitreya.
12. Pawon Temple
Pawon Temple is located in a straight line to the east from Borobudur Temple and Mendut Temple. All three are established as an inseparable unit. The reliefs of Pawon Temple are the beginning of the reliefs of Borobudur Temple.
