Magpies can be pushy when they want a feed. They come for bales and there's a chick handily placed near the veg patch to collect the loot At 5:15 the lady Magpie races over and swipes one of his roaches - and he immediately takes one of hers so they're even. There hasn't been too much theft this season.
[I usually check the ads and cut down the number to about 1/3 - I couldn't do that with this video for some reason but I tried a number of times and nothing doing. I hope the ads aren't too thick...]
A bit of an ant problem with one of the bales but he managed it well and got plenty of food despite the Ant Nest Surprise. I think he ate one, and maybe some of their larvae.
The magpies haven't been coming for mad bales lately – a good thing because it means they're getting enough food without assistance. A while ago they were landing on the balcony and screeching to try and get me to turn bales over for them hours before the usual time. (It didn't work and it was very loud.)
It seems at 12:23 the magpie chick was NOT expecting me to speak to it. Either that or I sound awful to it. By the way, I don't know if there is one male or two amongst the chicks. I'm pretty sure there is at least one female and one male. I'm leaning towards two males...
I'm pretty sure the reptile he nails at 22:11 is a baby Worm-skink. I found one the other day in the veg patch. And it turns out that none of the eggs I find are ever going to be Five-clawed Worm Skinks because they are viviparous – they give birth to live young.
I do my most casual “in passing” bale turnover ever and also try and lure a chick under a bale (unsuccessfully).
At 25:12 I said he was looking pensive. If someone is pensive for a long time and then they cheer up, would the best word to describe someone who used to be pensive be ex-pensive? As in “She was pensive for a time and now she's ex-pensive and cheery.” The English language is a wonderful thing.
I love how at 30:40 he realises the bale is played out and goes off to summon his bale butler. He does this regularly - he finds me and hangs around until I take the hint and turn something else over for him. And a bale finally fell apart! Well, strings have fallen off before so I suppose that counts as a bale falling apart. But bits fell out of the middle which is a first.
This was a combination of three days of footage. I meant to add a note where Day 3 started but obviously I forgot – it was at 24:07.
Cheers folks, have a good one!
