When vaccines started arriving in Canada, there weren’t enough for every adult. But the national advisory committee on vaccinations and the federal government felt that people in Indigenous communities were particularly at risk from COVID-19.
That’s because of data we have from past pandemics and diseases, where much worse outcomes were observed in Indigenous communities than in the general population.
In order to avoid what they felt could be an adverse outcome from COVID-19, Indigenous communities were given prioritization.
