(18 Mar 2017) Thousand of St. Petersburg residents staged a demonstration on Saturday against the handover of the city's landmark, St. Isaac's Cathedral, to the Russian Orthodox Church.
The cathedral was designated a museum during Soviet times and was under state control.
After the Soviet collapse it continued to serve as a museum, although religious services were occasionally held there as well.
Many critics of the proposed handover of control are concerned about the growing power of the Orthodox Church in Russia.
