Diy Pizza oven build, ep.1 building the base
In this series we go through building a very cheap and light pizza oven. starting with the base of the oven. the vermiculite and gym ball design is very popular on YouTube, in my build I've made a few personal tweaks.

vermiculite is a natural volcanic product often used in gardening for its porosity. in this application it is very affordable, lightweight, insulating, and heat resistant. great for what we have in mind (perlite is very similar, in hindsight I would have tried with perlite as I've heard it is less crumbly once dried)
The floating bed of fire bricks is something I haven't seen yet so I'm keen to see how it goes. I did this for a number of reasons
1) in the event the oven didn't work out, it would be very easy to remove the bricks and reuse them
2) having them floating (as in not fixed) will hopefully allow some movement during expansion and retraction during heating and cooling. having dissimilar materials in this environment is likely to cause cracking, a known issue with vermiculite ovens
3) fire bricks are very expensive relative to the rest of the build (at least where I live). so I wanted them to be used most efficiently, so only used as the direct cooking surface
While the vermiculite is great for insulating (stopping the transfer of heat) and should stop heat escaping the oven, this is the opposite of what we want the fire bricks to do, the bricks absorb a lot of heat and therefore help cook the bottom of the pizza very quickly
