(25 Jul 2017) President Donald Trump is scheduled to speak at a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, fresh off the latest failure of his efforts to repeal the Affordable Health Act. Youngstown, in the heart of northeast Ohio, is home to many working-class white voters who traditionally vote Democrat but swung for Trump during the most recent election.
As Congress continues to debate if and how to repeal and replace the ACA, Ohioans heavily reliant on government health spending say they watch the news constantly and can't sleep at night because they're worried about their medical bills.
Darrell Price was born with cerebral palsy and had his hip replaced. He lives in subsidized housing and relies on a Medicaid-funded assistant to get him dressed, washed, and fed. He's worried he'll be forced from his apartment into a nursing home or into the street with proposed Medicaid cuts in the Senate, and says he watches the news until one in the morning.
Judy Martin burned through her life savings a year after retiring, and now relies on social security and Medicare to pay for her expenses. She suffers from diabetes and has to pay for supplemental insurance and medication out of pocket. Martin voted for Trump and has faith that he'll find a way to lower healthcare costs for "the little people" like her.
Jeni Potter, whose daughter, Erin, was diagnosed with leukemia a decade ago, says her family has been looking at houses in Canada because they're worried that their daughter will lose health insurance because of payout caps. She doesn't understand why Congress has been in a rush to repeal healthcare and wishes that Trump would be more careful with healthcare reform.
