We believe accessibility matters, but our house didn't communicate it. Can a wheelchair user get in your church, business, and house? Are you willing to provide reasonable accommodations? What if you went ALL IN and created spaces for everyone to belong? What if all spaces were created for all people? An accessible world is an inclusive world.
We are willing to go all in to help change how people experience disability. The change starts here - with us, our family, and our home. A recent show on Cakes & Conversations highlighted our guest "Dr. Sarah". Sarah has Cerebral Palsy and is a wheelchair user. We could not film in our home because it is surrounded by steps. We want a house and studio where EVERYONE feels they belong.
In order to make space for EVERYONE, it may require you to go ALL IN, make change, and double down. Be comfortable being uncomfortable. Take a step in this direction today. Start a friendship with someone with a disability, move some chairs and tables to make space at church, invest in a ramp even if you don't know today who will use it.
Let change start with us! Don't wait until someone with a disability shows up and can't read the menu, can't get through the front door, or can't meet your expectations for a job applicant. Your ramp, font size, space, applications, job descriptions, accommodations are an INVITATION saying YOU BELONG HERE. Let's go all in and together change how everyone experiences disability one creation at a time.
Do you have a friend with a disability or genetic disorder? If not, you are missing out. What if you discovered you were the best version of you once you began that friendship? Start a relationship today with someone with a disability, ask great questions, listen, and let me know what you learned about YOU in the process. You are worth it because YOU too deserve to be treated like royalty.
