Rise of the Resistance Festival launch event.
On 3 September 1928, Alexander Fleming returned to his laboratory after a holiday. Before leaving, he had inoculated staphylococci on culture plates and left them on his bench. On return, one was contaminated with a fungus and the colonies of staphylococci surrounding it had been destroyed – by the antibiotic effect of penicillin.
On 3 September 2021, Rise of the Resistance celebrated the birth of antibiotics with a theatrical conversation between Healthcare Scientists, Precision AMR researchers, artists and patients on the looming health crisis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) which Fleming predicted in his 1945 Nobel Prize acceptance speech.
What can we learn from microbes about innovation and cooperation?
What can we learn from each other by sharing expertise and experience?
What is AMR and what can we do about it?
