HELLO DEAR BEAUTIFUL SOUL 🌟
In today’s video, we’re exploring Straw Breathing – a technique inspired by yogic practices, simplified to make it accessible for everyone. This approach helps you calm your mind, ease anxiety, and connect with a deeper state of relaxation.
••• THE YOGIC ROOTS AND COOLING EFFECT OF STRAW BREATHING •••
Straw Breathing is adapted from Sheetali Pranayama, a traditional yogic technique known for its cooling and soothing effects. In Sheetali, the tongue is rolled, allowing inhaled air to pass over moist surfaces in the mouth, creating a subtle cooling effect on the body. This traditional practice helps calm both body and mind by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which reduces stress and promotes relaxation.
WHY THE STRAW BREATHING ADAPTATION?
Through my years of teaching breathwork, I’ve observed that rolling the tongue can be challenging for some. This alternative method using a regular drinking straw offers similar benefits without needing to roll the tongue, making it accessible to everyone. If you’re comfortable rolling your tongue, feel free to try it out in this practice as well!
••• HOW TO PRACTICE STRAW BREATHING •••
Choose from these two methods:
•WITHOUT A STRAW (as demonstrated in the video) – This version simulates the calming effect without any tools, making it practical anywhere.
•WITH A DRINKING STRAW – This variation is great for lung training and mindfulness.
Here’s how yo can practice:
• Find a comfortable, quiet space.
• Sit down and relax with the straw in your mouth.
• Inhale slowly through the straw for a count of four.
• Exhale through the straw for a count of 6, 8, or even 12.
Repeat for five minutes or longer, focusing on the calming sensation of each breath.
••• CONSISTENCY IS KEY •••
Integrating Straw Breathing into your regular practice, whether daily or weekly, can create a deep sense of calm and enhance emotional resilience.
This practice is here for you, and so is this community. Leave a comment if you have any questions, thoughts, or just want to share your experience.
Much love,
Benjamin ❤️
