A signet ring is an ancient form of jewelry. Signet rings used to be an official form of signature. Sometimes called a seal ring, they were used to stamp a unique design into wax on a document. Signet rings have carved metal or stone on the top called an intaglio. If there is no carving on the top, it is referred to as a blank signet ring to indicate that the ring is awaiting its carving. Class rings are a form of signet ring, but they can also support other designs including initials or monograms and family crests.
