"They ripped off my sunglasses, told me to empty my pockets, and said 'we're looking for Israeli spies'. At this point, I didn't know what to think. These were heavily bearded, heavily armed people who were not local Kashmiris. These were, you could tell quite quickly, were hardened guerrillas who'd come over the border from Pakistan and Afghanistan to wage holy war, and they drove us down to a small village where we met another English guy and his wife, David Mackie."

4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Kim Housego, Associated Press reporter:
"They separated us and locked my parents and his wife in a room and took David and I out into the night. Shortly afterwards they sat down and said 'We are Islamic fundamentalists, our guns are for the Indian army, but we want your help to release our top commanders held in Indian prisons.'"

6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Kim Housego, Associated Press reporter:
"We were kept on the move for much of the time, walking off that night, stumbling across rocks, wading through icy rivers, sleeping in abandoned shepherd huts high up in the mountains, trying to evade the Indian army and we would sometimes during the day we'd spend mornings and they asked us lots of questions, they asked us questions about world affairs, they always talked about how they were going to go to Bosnia or fight with the Palestinians against Israel."

9. SOUNDBITE: (English) Kim Housego, Associated Press reporter:
"Several months after my kidnapping, after I was released, a group of foreigners, three Britons and one American, were kidnapped off the streets of Delhi and they were finally released through a shoot-out, at which time they arrested, India arrested Ahmed Saeed Omar Sheikh. I then met those three Britons and had lunch with them in England shortly afterwards and they recounted in quite considerable detail, how Saeed Sheikh had both bragged about having been responsible for my kidnapping, having said he had actually opposed my release. Later I went back to Kashmir to try to answer some unanswered questions and I met with a series of officials, including Indian intelligence, who confirmed that they believed Saeed Sheikh had certainly been involved in my kidnapping."

STORYLINE:
An Associated Press reporter who believes the man behind his abduction in Kashmir in 1994 is the same man responsible for the kidnap and murder of journalist Daniel Pearl has spoken of his experiences.
British reporter Kim Housego was on a family vacation in Kashmir when he was kidnapped by Islamic militants.
Housego, then 16, believes the man behind his abduction was Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh - the main suspect in the kidnap and slaying of Wall Street reporter Daniel Pearl.
After trekking through an isolated valley in Indian-controlled Kashmir, Housego was separated from his parents and placed with another kidnapped Briton, 36-year-old David Mackie.
His parents were left behind, along with a crumpled note demanding that India free three of their top commanders.
Housego later learned his kidnappers were members of Harkat-ul-Ansar, a group known for its ruthlessness.
The group, which later renamed itself Harkat-ul-Mujahedeen, was branded a terrorist organization in 1997 by the United States because of its links with Osama bin Laden.
