In this episode of my ongoing focus on 80s synth-pop, I show an example of how chords and melodic structure was done in the 80s synth-pop tradition to add tension, depth and elegance to a composition.
I strongly suggest you check out the finished track before watching the tutorial to get a feeling of the actual song I use to demonstrate.

I actually wrote this track, with the lyrics, in about 15 minutes. I always sit down with a keyboard or piano and work out the whole composition before recording and arranging the different synth parts.
I knew from the get go that I wanted a verse in Dm and that I wanted to end the verse with a Asus chord to segue down into a chorus starting with a F-chord.
The main theme of the story (lyrics) was that of feeling neglected and the start "I love you more" came right at the start and I just had to find chords quicly because of words entering my head at a fast pace.
The chorus then came naturally and the E-chord I use in the middle is a trick used in many other songs to have a feeling of modulation within the chorus, so I just drew that from "experience" Now you can use it too if you don't know it from before.
The bridge is a part I originally had written for another unreleased track many years ago, but I finally found good use for it in this track instead. It saves the planet to recirculate :D
