*Child Maintenance Service: Urgent Information For Parents*
Hello how are you, my name is Keith for those who don't know me, I run a YouTube channel called @ChildMaintenanceUK, obviously on YouTube, and I deal with matters relating to the Child Maintenance Service. I speak to people who are receiving parents as well as paying parents okay, and I generally help with those sort of CMS inquiries that people struggle to find the answers to. So today is a little bit of an update video. I'd like to talk to you about a change of procedures at the CMS, that's become evident in the last week or so. I've seen screenshots that people have posted online and this is in relation to how the Child Maintenance Service deal with late or missed payments.
So up until recently the stock advice that would have been given by me and by many others, particularly on Facebook, and supporting Facebook users with child maintenance matters, would be that a payment is late or missed after five working days, and you couldn't report that to the Child Maintenance Service until the fifth day.
Looks like there's been a bit of a change. I've seen online screenshots now saying that you can report a payment after 3 days. I assume at this stage, this is three working days because it would be a bit ridiculous to allow you to report within three normal days, and the reason for that is we have Bank Holidays in this country, and if you pay by standing order, banks do not send those standing orders on Bank Holidays. So this would mean that every Easter if your payment was due on a Friday it would not get to the destination before the Tuesday and likewise if Christmas day is a Friday, that means traditional Boxing day is the Monday, so again the payments won't get to the CMS until Tuesday. What's really really important for the Child Maintenance Service is that you do make payments regularly and on time and so they would obviously encourage people to pay by standing order so therefore I assume at the moment it has to be three working days so that doesn't include weekends or bank holidays.
