Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson explains how the sun generates its heat and how long it takes for that energy to reach Earth. The sun's core is a very hot and dense place, where hydrogen atoms are fused together to create helium atoms which takes about 10-100 million years. This fusion reaction releases a tremendous amount of energy, which heats up the sun's interior. The heat then travels through the sun's outer layers, eventually reaching the surface. It takes about 8 minutes and 20 seconds for the sun's heat to reach Earth. This is because the sun is so far away, and light travels at a finite speed. He also explains that the amount of heat that reaches Earth depends on the sun's activity level. When the sun is more active, it emits more heat, which can cause the Earth's climate to change. The sun goes about its everyday job to provide us with the light and heat that we need to survive. Without the sun, life on Earth would not be possible.
