One of television's very best detective dramas, and perhaps the first 'new wave' of what would be a mass wave of detective and police dramas throughout the next decade, Ironside was a trailblazer on broadcast television.
The series starred one of industry's very best actors, Raymond Burr, who had wrapped up a long and successful run on television as Perry Mason in the spring of 1966. The fall 1967 season was just being contemplated that summer, and Raymond Burr was on the top of everyone's list for another series. NBC and Ironside were the match Mr. Burr was seeking - a ground breaking television series about a police detective physically confined to a wheelchair - the ultimate acting challenge.
The theme song for the series, composed by Quincy Jones, was another ground breaker that would usher in a more street-wise, jazz infused sound to television series that would become wide spread in the 1970s.
Ironside debuted on NBC on September 14, 1967, and would run for eight seasons until January 16, 1975. This special reunion of the Ironside cast took place on April 23, 1993 (broadcast date) in preparation for a May 1993 Ironside TV-Movie special that would soon air.
Much more on Ironside in the coming week, as we look back at the series and the cast shares thoughts and memories. Also joining the Ironside cast in this reunion is Barbara Hale of Perry Mason fame! Note: To see more of this reunion focusing on Burr and Hale segment on Vicki!, please select the 'Barbara Hale' special video clip from January of this year (2017) here at Television Vanguard.
