Amlodipine is a treatment for both angina and high blood pressure. Here we have Dr Daniel Atkinson, the Clinical Lead at Treated, to tell us what it is and how it works.
Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that treats high blood pressure by widening your blood vessels. It does this by preventing calcium from entering the arteries. This makes the blood vessels relax and widen, lowering your blood pressure. For angina, it increases the blood flow to your heart, reducing chest pain. It's available in three doses: 2.5mg, 5mg and 10mg and should be taken once a day. It's the first choice of treatment for white people, but if you're of Black and Asian descent, another treatment will be better for you.
