India passed a bill that will grant citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from neighbouring countries who entered India illegally before 2015. The bill was criticised for violating the religious equality guaranteed by the constitution and concerns among India’s Muslims are rising. Hundreds of troops have been deployed in the country’s northeastern states as the legislation led to violent demonstrations. The legislation was passed by the Indian parliament on December 11, but it will be sent to the president to be signed into law.
