This is the educator instructional video for the Civil Society - Not on our Soil - A Climate Justice Reality episode module. We take you through the module focus, key aims, educators resources and learner activities.
This video showcases the negative social, environmental and economic impact that the petrochemical industry is having along the Durban South Coast communities. The video introduces two characters, Shanice Firmin and Desmond D’Sa who are environmental activists in the area who are both lobbying against the petrochemical industry through civil society organisations. Using these two environmental activists as inspiration, learners will gain some insight into what processes one can undergo to implement widespread change through civic participation, civil society organisations and active citizenry. The video gives us a wonderful reminder that the South African constitution has been designed to keep the flame of democracy going by ensuring that all voices are heard. This, as the learners will come to know, is the role and responsibility of many civil society organisations who in many ways are bridging the voice between people and the government.
