Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga says preliminary figures show that this year's Easter weekend road fatalities, nationally have increased compared to last year's 162. Speaking at the Mooi River Toll Plaza in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands she attributed about 80% of road crashes to negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
At the same time the province's transport MEC Sipho Hlomuka says the number of people who have died on KwaZulu-Natal's roads has risen from 18 to 24.
Hlomuka joined traffic officials that were manning a roadblock at the Mooi River Toll Plaza on the N3 in the Midlands.
