New York has become the 36th US state to ban what is being called a mounting drug menace across the country.

The legislation came as authorities across the US clampdown on synthetic marijuana, now ranked as the most popular narcotic among teenagers after cannabis itself.

The cheaper and easily attainable drug, which is packaged under various names including "Herbal Incense", "Spice", or "Spike", has been blamed for a sharp increase in hospital cases.
