Instead, Octavian formed an alliance with Antony and Lepidus, creating the Second Triumvirate and consolidating power. This political shift marked the end of the Republic and the beginning of Rome’s transformation into an empire. Cicero’s failure to recognize the new political realities left him vulnerable, and his death under the triumvirate’s proscriptions symbolized the final collapse of the Republican system he had fought to protect.
