Da un caso di celiachia su 2 mila a uno su 150: i numeri di questa malattia autoimmune, negli ultimi trent’anni, sono spaventosamente cambiati. Alla base, una duplice ragione: una maggiore facilità nella diagnosi e un radicale cambiamento nel nostro stile di vita. Ma a mutare è stata anche la natura stessa della malattia: se trent’anni fa la celiachia era prevalentemente pediatrica, che interessava tra i 3 e i 5 mila soggetti italiani, considerata rara dallo stesso Sistema Sanitario Nazionale, oggi la situazione si è ribaltata. Adesso, nel mondo, la sua prevalenza si aggira tra lo 0.5 e l’1.5%, quindi statisticamente un individuo su 150. I più colpiti sono i bambini tra i 4 e gli 8 anni e gli adulti tra i 25 e i 35 anni. In età pediatrica si parla soltanto di circa 30% di casi, il restante 70% si manifesta invece in età adulta. Una malattia, infine, che colpisce prevalentemente il sesso femminile, con un rapporto 3:1, ma le ragioni alla base di questi picchi sono al momento ancora sconosciute. Così c’è ancora molta disinformazione sulla differenza tra intolleranza ed allergia al glutine.
