Why do I need a referral to see a specialist and who will give me the referral?
Your doctor can provide you with a referral if your condition needs specialist care. You don't need a referral to see a specialist but not having one may mean extra costs to you.
If you have a health issue:
a. See a GP, they will advise if you need specialist care
b. See a specialist, specialists provides care. For example, when you are pregnant, your GP can refer you to an Obstetrician.
c. Your specialist may refer you to another specialist if needed. The second specialist provides care. For example, when you are pregnant, with gestational diabetes, your GP can refer you to an Obstetrician, who may refer you to an Endocrinologist.
Before you leave your doctor with a referral letter, make sure you have asked any questions you have.
