In 1993, during an excavation in the Republic Square, located in the center of modern Tarsus, a series of findings were accidentally discovered. Subsequent to this discovery, excavation works were carried out under the leadership of Tarsus Museum and the scientific consultancy of Prof. Dr. Levent ZOROĞLU from Selçuk University between 1993 and 2001.
As a result of the excavations, an east-west oriented street believed to have been built by the Romans in the 1st century AD was revealed. Various structures from different periods were also uncovered around this street. Despite some disturbances, the pavement of the street has largely preserved its appearance from the Ancient Age. The Ancient Street, showcasing the splendor of Tarsus two thousand years ago, is constructed with basalt stones placed in a polygonal technique, and a 65-meter section of the street has been exposed. The fishbone pattern that catches the eye at first glance, along with the drainage system just below it, indicates that architecturally it differs from other streets in Anatolia. These channels, which allow the disposal of surface water as well as other waste, are directed towards the main channel leading to the south of the city, towards Lake Regma. Additionally, manholes are placed at certain intervals along the street. The wheel ruts observed in some places provide evidence that the street was used for long periods for urban transportation.
To the southwest of the street, the remains of a structure with a single room and a mosaic-covered courtyard were unearthed, believed to have been used as a residence. In the center of the courtyard of this structure, there is a residue of a pool. Furthermore, this structure and the columned platform just southwest of the street are dated to the 4th or 5th century AD.
Tarsus has been home to many notable figures throughout history. For instance, the renowned Roman general and politician Marcus Antonius was born in Tarsus in the 1st century AD. Additionally, Saint Paul, a significant figure in Christian history, is also associated with Tarsus, making it a city of importance in Christianity.
