New EU legislation that reinforces Schengen border controls will shift authority to a European level, set strict guidelines for temporary border checks and conduct unannounced inspections. Rapporteur Carlos Coelho of the EPP Group says Schengen could be in danger without the new legislation, after recent immigration flows prompted some member states to impose border checks.
