Do you know how they say lightning never strikes twice? Well, it sure does when it comes to our skyscrapers. The taller the building, the more likely it is to get zapped. Take the Empire State Building, for example, it gets hit by lightning 25 times a year. But don't worry, these buildings have some serious protection in place to keep them safe from damage. It's called a lightning protection system, or LPS for short. This bad boy has three parts the air termination system, also known as the lightning catcher, the conductor system, which redirects the current and the earth terminating system safely sending that electric shock into the ground.
Skyscrapers are usually at least 100 to 150 meters high. One would think that they are exposed to lightning strikes. As you probably remember, during a thunderstorm lightening strikes hit points that stand out from the rest. But what if lightning strikes a skyscraper?
