When Mary supposes Jesus to be the gardener in John 20, the passage is telling us that Jesus is the reversal of Cain, the fulfillment of Abel, and the Last Adam. Where Adam and Cain failed in their gardener vocation of keeping what God had given them, Jesus restores and fulfills. Easter Sunday means for all of us who have killed what we were called to keep, that in Jesus, God the Gardener is returning to restore all we have lost.
