Southern Sea Slaters look a lot like the woodbugs, pill bugs or woodlice found in gardens but they reside in areas above the tides. They seem to dislike getting their feet wet but move just ahead of the tide in their search for dead plant and animal material to eat. Sea Slaters can be submerged in the water briefly and they retain a strong hold on the rocks. If one is carried away by a wave it will likely drown if it cannot find a rocky foothold and regain dry land.
