It's hard to imagine there was a time that broadcast TV in the UK finished around midnight and started again at about 9:30 the next morning, usually to show educational programmes for schools and colleges. Then in January 1983 the BBC started breakfast TV followed a month later by TV AM , IBA's franchise winner. These clips should jog your memory on what was a bit of a novelty at first - Watching TV in the morning ! It started at 6:25 until 9:25 am when ITV regions took back the transmitters ( you could distinctly see a change in the timebase - if you are technically bothered). TV AM lost the franchise in 1992. Incidentally, Jeff Wayne, who was behind the album ' War of the Worlds' also wrote TV AM's theme tune.
