On August 15, a significant number of protesters from the student-led movement that deposed Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took to the streets of Dhaka. Their aim was to prevent any rallies by Hasina's supporters on what was formerly National Mourning Day, a public holiday commemorating the assassination of Hasina’s father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in 1975. The protesters, many of whom were students, brandished sticks and flags while confronting individuals dressed in black, whom they suspected of being Hasina's supporters. During the clashes, several protesters obstructed Reuters' attempts to film the events. The unrest, which initially started as demonstrations against employment quotas, evolved into a broader movement demanding Hasina's removal, resulting in around 300 deaths. In response to the power vacuum, an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been established to oversee the transition and organise forthcoming elections.
