In 1910 Mary Macarthur led the Women Chain Makers to victory in a spectacular strike in the Black Country’s Cradley Heath. Macarthur was born in Glasgow in 1880 and became one of the labour movement’s most charismatic and inspirational figures. In this talk, Cathy will provide some insights into the fascinating life of Mary Macarthur. She will also talk about how she came to write her biography and why she believes that Macarthur’s work still has as much relevance for women workers today as it did 100 years ago.
Cathy Hunt is an independent historian who has written extensively about women, work and trade unionism. Her biography of Mary Macarthur, Righting the Wrong, was published last year by History West Midlands.
