As Official Overlay Supporter to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, GL events UK is delighted to be providing temporary infrastructure at Lee Valley Velopark, which will host track cycling competition at Birmingham 2022.
The velodrome staged the London 2012 track cycling competition providing some of the Games’ most exciting moments. In front of capacity crowds of 6,000, Team GB dominated, with seven out of ten possible golds and their Paralympic GB counterparts also triumphed, winning a total of 15 medals.
Following the end of the Games, transformation work began to create Lee Valley VeloPark on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. This involved modifying the BMX track on which the Olympic competition was held, so that it could be used by the public, reconfiguring the velodrome from its Games time use, and constructing new mountain bike trails and a road circuit.
In April 2014 Lee Valley VeloPark opened, becoming the world’s only venue that brings together the four Olympic cycling disciplines: track in the iconic London 2012 velodrome, BMX, road and mountain biking. Since then, it has successfully blended a mixture of community and elite programmes that cater for first time riders, cyclists with disabilities, young people, and those participating in local, regional, national and international events.
