On Friday, the Supreme Court adjourned the hearing of a group of petitions challenging the constitutionality of the caste-based survey conducted by the Bihar government until January 2024. The court refused to issue a stay or status quo order preventing the state from using the caste survey data. "We cannot stop a state government or any government from making a decision," a bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti said orally today. This division bench is currently hearing a petition filed by the non-governmental organizations Youth for Equality and Ek Soch Ek Prayas against the Patna High Court's decision of August 2 to uphold the Bihar government's decision to conduct a caste-based survey.
