Did you know you can easily pay your vehicle tax by Direct Debit, either online or at a Post Office?
Your Direct Debit can be set up to be paid monthly, 6 monthly or yearly. When your tax runs out, we’ll renew it automatically.
What you need:
If you’re the keeper of the vehicle, you’ll need your V11 reminder letter or your V5C vehicle registration certificate (log book).
If you’ve just bought the vehicle, you’ll need to use the V5C/2 new keeper supplement - the green section of the log book. Make sure you get this from the seller.
The vehicle must be insured and have a valid MOT in place if it needs one.
We’ll also need some personal details from you to set up your Direct Debit. These include the name of your bank or building society, the account number and sort code, your address, date of birth and email address.
Once you’ve set up:
Once you’ve set up your Direct Debit, you’ll receive confirmation by email or post. This will tell you about the amount you’ll be paying and the fixed dates that we’ll take the payments on. These dates cannot be changed.
The first payment will not be taken until the vehicle tax has started. It can take up to 10 days, but you can still use the vehicle before the payment is taken.
We’ll continue to take your Direct Debit payment unless you tell us you’re no longer using the vehicle, have sold, scrapped or exported it. We’ll then stop taking the payments and will automatically issue you with a refund for any full months that you haven’t used.
Key points to remember:
So, remember your Direct Debit will renew automatically, make sure you have the money in your account on the payment date, and tell us when you are no longer using the vehicle, have sold, scrapped or exported it.
