Gatwick Airport's south terminal has been evacuated this morning following an unspecified 'security' incident. Airport bosses began probing a security incident sometime around 9am on Friday before ordering passengers to leave. Eyewitnesses said even passengers who had been through security were being evacuated from the airport, near Crawley in West Sussex. Gatwick Express services will not stop at the station until 2pm at the earliest. The train operator has advised passengers to suspend their journeys. The nature of the incident is not yet known. One passenger told a MailOnline reporter: 'Nothing much is happening here. The passengers know nothing.' Gatwick Airport said in a statement on X: 'A large part of the South Terminal has been evacuated as a precaution while we continue to investigate a security incident. 'Passengers will not be able to enter the South Terminal while this is ongoing. 'Safety and security of our passengers and staff remains our top priority. We are working hard to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.' Video shared on social media showed scores of passengers walking outside the terminal as security staff probed the incident. One passenger said he had been told by police it was a 'security incident', adding: 'Looks like they are only evacuating the main terminal and pushing people to the gates.' Another said he got through customs until he was then ordered to leave the terminal. He wrote: 'Arrived at London Gatwick for routine connection. Got through customs to find out they're evacuating the entire airport. 'Even people through security are being taken outside. Trains shut down and 1000's of all over the streets and carparks waiting.' Trains and buses to Gatwick have been suspended while the incident is ongoing.
The Gatwick Express X account told passengers: 'Gatwick Airport will not be served until further notice. 'This is due to the Police and emergency services dealing with an incident at the airport. Trains cannot call at Gatwick Airport until further notice. 'Thameslink, Southern and Gatwick Express trains can still run through the area, but will NOT be stopping at Gatwick Airport.' Gatwick is Britain's second busiest airport, serving approximately 41 million passengers a year. Sussex Police, which covers the airport, has been contacted for comment. No statement from the force was immediately available. It came after a controlled explosion was carried out at the US Embassy in London earlier today. No link has been established between the incidents. #gatwickairport #Gatwickairportevacuated
