Ozempic is a diabetes drug used to treat Type 2 Diabetes and also helps with weight loss. Though, it is not a weight loss drug so it is used off label for weight loss.
Wegovy is licensed for weight loss and has a higher dose of semaglutide than Ozempic. It should be used for those with obesity and BMI of over 30 with a weight-related condition like heart disease, high cholesterol, PCOS etc.
Both Wegovy and Ozempic are given once weekly under the skin via injection and the dose can be increased at 4 weekly intervals.
The semaglutide injections also known as 'the skinny jab' work as appetite suppressants and imitates the GLP-1 hormone that is released when eating so making the body feel full to eat less calories. They should not be used alone but in conjunction with diet and exercise.
Wegovy and Ozempic side effects include risk of pancreatitis, gallstones, kidney failure, rebound weight gain, and common ones such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation. There are suggestions of thyroid cancer found in rodents but not yet in humans.
So are wegovy and ozempic miracle weight loss drugs? Are you happy or concerned about the pros and cons such as rebound weight gain after stopping the drug? Please drop some comments.
