Al Ghazālī’s hierarchal classifications might sit uneasily with certain modern readers, however, who can dispute the Quran’s unambiguous classification of hierarchy, based on Taqwa (Quran 49:13). Al Ghazālī describes three classes of fasting:
The fasting of the common people
The fasting of the elect
The fasting of the elect of the elect
The following talk will focus on the fasting of the common people.
Reading from Ghazali’s masterpiece Ihyā‘ ‘ulūm al-din (The chapter on the mysteries of fasting) the Shaykh goes through the two reasons of what makes fasting so special that Allah Most High has claimed this act of worship to belong to Him exclusively. As goes the famous prophetic tradition “Fasting is Mine and it is I who give reward for it…” (Hadeeth Qudsi)
