The Egyptian Book of the Dead is a collection of funerary texts that were used by the ancient Egyptians to help the deceased navigate the afterlife. The Book of the Dead was placed in the coffin of the deceased by people of all social classes, from the pharaoh to the commoners.
One of the central scenes in the Book of the Dead depicts the deceased standing before the god Osiris while their hearts are weighed against the feather of Ma'at (the goddess of truth and justice). If their heart is found to be lighter than the feather, they are deemed worthy of entering the afterlife. If their hearts are heavy with sin, they will be devoured by the goddess Ammit.
The Book of the Dead contains a chapter reserved for a list of sins the deceased denies having committed.
