Are you wondering how much you can give to your kids—or anyone else—before paying gift taxes? The answer might surprise you! In this video, I explain the difference between *annual exclusions and lifetime exemptions*, so you can give generously without worrying about the IRS.
For 2024, you can give up to $18,000 per person, per year, without needing to report it. In 2025, that amount increases to $19,000. If you're married and your child is married, that means you and your spouse could gift up to $72,000 in 2024—or $76,000 in 2025—to your child and their spouse without even filing a form!
If you exceed those annual exclusions, you’ll need to file Form 709 to track your lifetime exemption, which is $13.61 million per individual in 2024 and $13.99 million in 2025. For couples, that’s a combined $28 million before gift taxes kick in!
