Every Airline OBSESSED the A330neo Over Boeing, Even A350! Here's Why
The A3 30 was once met with skepticism and even scorn for its lackluster order numbers compared to its siblings in the Airbus family. However, it has recently broken those doubts with a positive reception from airlines. Now hailed as superior to the 7 8 7, and even outshining the highly favored A3 50, the A3 30 Neo is proving it has the ability to obsess the airlines.
Why is that? Could it become more popular than its competitors? Let's find out the answers in today's episode.
Overview
Every Airline OBSESSED the A330neo Over Boeing, Even A350! Here's Why
At Britain’s Farnborough Air Show, the spotlight typically shines on the largest airlines with the biggest jets. However, during this year’s event in July, Virgin Atlantic, often seen as the underdog compared to British Airways, made headlines by showcasing one of its new midsize Airbus A3 30 Neo parked near the runway.
Virgin Atlantic’s CEO, Shai Weiss, stepped out of the aircraft to announce an order for seven more A3 30 Neo’s, bringing the airline's total fleet of this model to 19 and positioning Virgin as a predominantly Airbus operator. This marks a significant shift, as Sir Richard Branson’s airline has historically favored Boeing aircraft, especially the iconic 7 4 7, whose upper deck inspired the name of Virgin’s business-class service, Upper Class. Virgin is not the only airline to have ordered the A3 30 Neo. Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific placed an order for 30 Airbus 900 variant on August 20 24, while U.S. giant Delta added another 12 Airbus this aircraft to its fleet on September 20 23, bringing Delta’s total A3 30 Neo count to 47. Malaysia Airlines has ordered 20, not to mention Germany’s Condor and Portugal’s national carrier Tap, both of which have recently announced large orders for this aircraft.

Therefore, during the July airshow, the aircraft secured a total of 42 aircraft orders. Additionally, in the four weeks following the Farnborough exhibition, Airbus received 57 firm new orders for the A3 30 Neo and 60 options, surpassing other aircraft models to become the most-ordered wide-body aircraft during that period. Overall, Airbus now has firm orders for 326 for this aircraft, of which 139 have been delivered.
This marks a significant turnaround for the twin-engine aircraft that first took to the skies in 20 18. Previously, most airlines favored the Boeing 7 8 7 'Dreamliner' or the larger Airbus A3 50, as both are newer designs. While the Neo is the latest upgraded model, it still builds upon the foundation of the A3 30 series, which was introduced in 19 92.
