A bomb blast in Lima has caused heavy damage to the residence of a high ranking Peruvian military officer.
The bomb went off in the early hours Monday.
Authorities believe the left-wing and anti-government terrorist group Shining Path is responsible.
The home of a Peruvian Army Colonel was bombed in the early morning hours of Monday.
The three level residence was blown apart by the device.
Authorities believe the bomb was planted by the extreme left-wing and anti-government terrorist group Shining Path.
The explosion went off around midnight and destroyed several houses in the prominent Lima area of Sanburja.

"Well, even before the moment of the explosion we were watching television. I though it was an earthquake. I got down to the floor and started to find my way out of the house. Look at it now, it is all destroyed."

The vehicle parked in front of the structure was blown away and ended up inside the main walls of the house.

According to witnesses, those inside the main target area were taken to area hospitals, but the police were not able to confirm or deny the reports.
What is clear, is that those in the community where the bomb went off are upset about the apparent lack of protection from the government.
This man with injuries to his head complained to local Mayor Maria Luisa Cuculiza.

"The man is a bit shaken. Understandably so, his house is totally destroyed. He is blaming the local authorities for not protecting him. But this is not a local problems. This is a national problem. I can only try to comfort him because this is a bad time for him. I hope God will allow this kind of thing to stop forever."

Several other public officials showed up at the scene, including the Minister of the Interior.
He promised residents that all necessary steps would be taken to find and punish those responsible.

"I'd like to tell the local populace not to panic. The authorities are already taking all necessary steps to capture those responsible and punish them accordingly."

The attack occurred on the day when Peru celebrates its independence and on the sixth anniversary of President Alberto Fujimori's term in government.
This is the second terrorist attack in less than a month. Shining Path was responsible for the first.
