Car care at it's core is removing or reducing scratches. In the early days, premium carnauba wax helped with filling in scratches and making vehicle paint appear like a mirror finish. But once the wax was removed the scratches were still there. Then came the rotary buffer. Rotary buffers helped with removing scratches but because of the forced rotation, the rotary buffers caused halos and micro scratches which were visually obvious, especially in the sunlight.
As technology progressed, random orbital, dual action machine polishes began to be used. The Dual Action Polishers do not have a gear driven rotary mechanism but has a gear driven random orbital mechanism. The rotation of the polisher head is created by the random orbit, meaning the rotation is not forced in turn not creating friction. This makes it possible for the random orbital, dual action (DA) polisher to create a flawless finish. The other piece to machine polishing is the polishing pad, compound, and polish used.
